American Football - Live scores, fixtures, results and standings
American football is a ball sport in which 2 teams of 11 people compete against each other. Each team must have at least 22 players (11 on defense and 11 on offense). They use an oval-shaped ball to play and try to score more points than the opponent. Whoever scores more points wins, or one team gives up and the other wins.
American football is played for a total of 60 minutes, but the time is spread out over 4x15 minutes. The difference from traditional football is that the referee keeps track of time, so 60 minutes of pure time is played. There is always one team's offense and the other team's defense on the field. The goal of the offense is to score the maximum number of points, thus trying for a touchdown or at least a field goal. Players are free to substitute at the time of the stoppage.
A grain-shaped ball is used for the game, which is made of 4 pieces of leather. Players must wear a metal helmet with a face grill, shoulder, hip and thigh pads and mouth guards. The away team wears a white version of the jerseys, the home team usually wears a dark version, unless a change is agreed upon in advance with the other team.
Scoring works as follows:
- A team scores 6 points for a touchdown.
- For a conversion after a touchdown, 2 points.
- On a kick from the ground to the goal line after a touchdown, 1 point.
- On a field goal, the team scores 3 points.
- A safety is worth 2 points.
The most famous competition in the world is the American NFL (National Football League). Other well-known leagues include the CFL (Canadian Football League), the GFL (German Football League), the AFL (Austrian Football League), the Swedish Superserien, the Finnish Vaahteraliiga, the Czech Snapbacks League and the international ELF (European League of Football).
